October is back, and so is one of the best deals of the year for San Diego families: Kids Free October. For the whole month, kids 12 and under get in free with a paying adult at dozens of museums, gardens and attractions around the county.

And if you’d rather not pay anyone at all? The calendar is stacked. Four of our top five October picks are free to get in, and the fifth, OB Oktoberfest, is a 21+ party with paid admission. Here they are, plus a few tips and fun facts to make each one better. Details can change, so tap the official links for the latest times and info before you head out.

Worth Knowing

  • Kids Free October runs all month: kids 12 and under get in free with a paying adult at participating venues.
  • Our top five picks cover Little Italy, Ocean Beach, Valley Center, Old Town and Liberty Station. Four are free to get in; OB Oktoberfest is 21+ with paid admission.
  • Free to get in doesn’t always mean free all the way through. Food, drinks, parking and some activities cost extra.

First, Kids Free October is back

The San Diego Museum Council’s annual promotion covers more than 70 museums, historic sites, aquariums and gardens, plus a handful of cultural spots in Tijuana. Some of the big names on the list include the Fleet Science Center, Birch Aquarium and the USS Midway Museum.

Good to know: Each venue sets its own rules. Some special exhibits cost extra, some limit how often you can use the offer, and multi-attraction passes generally don’t count as the “paying adult.” Check the venue’s listing before you go.

The top 5 October events in San Diego

1. Galbani Bella Vita Fest in Little Italy

Little Italy turns into an open-air gallery as artists create Italian-themed chalk art right on the pavement. Add live music, cooking demos, Italian food and a kids’ chalk area, and you’ve got one of the easiest free afternoons of the month. This is the festival’s third year.

Tip: The chalk art takes shape over the weekend, so pieces look very different from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. If you can, stop by both days, or aim for later Sunday to see finished work.

Did you know? The fest is put on by ArtWalk San Diego. The wine tasting area is the one part that needs a ticket; walking around is free.

2. OB Oktoberfest (21+, paid admission)

Ocean Beach does Oktoberfest its own way: a beach-town party at the OB Pier parking lot with German beer, brats, live music and a beer garden with a view of the Pacific. This year’s theme is a Y2K throwback. Heads up: unlike the rest of our list, this one is 21 and over and has paid admission.

Tip: Friday is Flashback Friday Locals Night, with 2-for-1 beers until 5 p.m. (Saturday’s 2-for-1 runs until 1 p.m.), so going early pays off. General admission tickets are sold at the gate.

Did you know? Organizers say the festival has given more than $850,000 to local organizations over its 20-plus years. Your pretzel is helping out the neighborhood.

3. Bates Nut Farm Pumpkin Patch

Up in Valley Center, Bates Nut Farm’s pumpkin patch is a North County fall tradition. Walking in is free. You’ll find wheelbarrows, hayrides, straw mazes and fields of pumpkins, and in October there’s even more: pony rides, a petting zoo and weekend live music.

Tip: Go on a weekday if you can. Parking is free during the week, but there’s a parking fee on October weekends. The farm also stays open later on the last few Fridays of the month. Leashed dogs are welcome.

Did you know? San Diego families have been coming here since the 1960s, and the farm calls itself century-old.

4. Día de los Muertos “La Experiencia” in Old Town

Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is decorated for Día de los Muertos with altars, marigolds and life-size Catrinas, along with live entertainment. It’s free and family-friendly, and it runs all season.

Tip: Go late in the afternoon and stay past sunset. A new lighting system changes the whole plaza after dark and shows details you’d miss during the day. Heads up: the venue is closed Oct. 7 for a private event.

Did you know? Marigolds are a key part of Día de los Muertos altars. Their bright color and scent are traditionally believed to help guide spirits home. While you’re in Old Town, the rest of the state historic park is free to explore too.

Tip: Check the costume contest categories ahead of time. There are age groups for kids and adults, plus groups and pets, so the whole family (dog included) can enter. Show up early if you plan to compete.

More Halloween fun: See our free Halloween events in San Diego County for 2026, with a map of trick-or-treat streets, carnivals and costume contests from Carlsbad to Chula Vista.

Did you know? Liberty Station used to be a Naval Training Center. The event also runs a food drive for military families and veterans, so check the event page for what’s being collected and bring something along.

Free to get in is the best kind of plan. Pick one, bring the kids (or the dog), and enjoy October.

Before you go

  • Check the official site the day before. Times, closures and activities can change.
  • Bring a little cash or a card. Most free events still charge for food, drinks, parking or extras.
  • Weekdays and early hours are calmer, especially at the pumpkin patch and Old Town.
