SDG&E wants to raise rates in 2027. Here’s how to speak up

SDG&E has asked regulators for a rate increase starting in 2027. Here's what it could add to a typical bill and how to weigh in before the CPUC decides.

SDG&E has asked state regulators to raise what it collects from customers starting in 2027. If it’s approved, the utility estimates a typical home would pay about $14 more a month for electricity and about $8.45 more a month for gas. Nothing is final yet. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) decides, and it’s holding public hearings where any San Diegan can comment. The first is in Santee on Nov. 10.

Worth Knowing
  • SDG&E’s General Rate Case asks for a $280 million (8.1%) revenue increase for 2027 and 2028.
  • For an average home, SDG&E estimates about +$14.03 a month for electric (400 kWh) and +$8.45 a month for gas (24 therms). Your amount depends on how much you use.
  • You can comment in person in Santee on Nov. 10, by phone or webcast on Dec. 9 and 10, or online at any time. The case number is A.26-06-015.

What is SDG&E asking for?

Every few years, California’s big utilities file a General Rate Case with the CPUC. It’s the main request that sets how much money the utility can collect to run and maintain its system. SDG&E’s latest filing, case A.26-06-015, asks for:

  • $280 million more (8.1%) in revenue for 2027–2028.
  • A formula that would raise revenue by another 5.5% to 8.7% a year from 2029 through 2031, tied to inflation and capital investment.

In its public notice, SDG&E says the money would pay for “wildfire mitigation, modernization of the natural gas system and electric grid, improvements in technology, improving customer experience,” and for “rising costs, like insurance.”

How much would my SDG&E bill go up?

SDG&E’s notice gives two estimates for an average residential customer:

  • Electric: about $14.03 more a month, based on 400 kWh a month.
  • Gas: about $8.45 more a month, based on 24 therms a month.

Your change could be bigger or smaller depending on your usage, your baseline territory (coast, inland, mountain or desert) and other factors. Keep in mind that the 8.1% is the increase in what SDG&E collects overall, not a direct percentage added to your bill.

No official action is taken at these hearings, but what you say goes on the record in front of the judge and commissioners who decide the case.

Tips for a comment that counts

  • Keep it short and specific. Say where you live, roughly what you pay, and how a change would affect your household or business.
  • Talk about the plan, not just the price. Do you support the wildfire or grid spending, part of it, or none? Say so.
  • Mention the multi-year formula if your concern is the 2029–2031 increases.
